Copper(I) chloride is called as cuprous chloride, is the lower chloride of copper, with the formula CuCl. The substance is a white solid is sparingly soluble in water but it is completely soluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Impure samples appears green because of the presence of copper(II) chloride. Its melting point is 430 degree C and boiling point is 1490 degree C.

Cuprous chloride (I), Copper (I) chloride) alias a Copper chloride is white cubic crystals or white powder, slightly soluble in water, in concentrated hydrochloric acid and ammonia to generate complex, insoluble in ethanol. Used as a catalyst, fungicide, mordant, decoloring agent; Metallurgical industry; In the analysis of gas used in the determination of carbon monoxide and acetylene.

Synthesis:

Copper(I) chloride is synthesed by reducing copper(II) chloride. example: with sulfur dioxide:

2 CuCl2 + SO2 + 2 H2O 2 CuCl + H2SO4 + 2 HCl

 

Many other reducing agents can be used

Cuprous chloride is mainly used as a heat and light stabilizer for nylon and a catalyst for chemical synthesis. It is also used as desulfuring agent in the refinery industry. It is crude for phthalocyanine blue pigments.
