Diisopropylamine is a secondary amine and its chemical formula is (CH3)2HC-NH-CH(CH3)2. It is best known as its lithium derivative of its conjugate base as lithium diisopropylamide also known as "LDA". LDA is a strong, non-nucleophilic base. Its melting point is -61 degree C, boiling point is 84 degree C and specific gravity is 0.72. It is slightly soluble in water and stable under ordinary conditions.

Diisopropylamine is a secondary amine and its chemical formula is (CH3)2HC-NH-CH(CH3)2. It is best known as its lithium derivative of its conjugate base as lithium diisopropylamide also known as "LDA". LDA is a strong, non-nucleophilic base. It can be dried by distillation from potassium hydroxide (KOH) or drying over sodium wire.

 

Diisopropylamine is available commercially. It is prepared by the reductive amination of acetone with ammonia using a modified copper oxide, generally copper chromite, as a catalyst

Diisopropylamine is mainly used as a precursor to two herbicides that is diallate and triallate, and also certain sulfenamides used in the vulcanization of rubber. It is also used to prepare N,N-D. Some of the bromide salt of diisopropylammonium bromide, diisopropylamine, is an organic molecular solid where their crystals are ferroelectric at certain room temperature. These render it a possible more biospherically inert alternative to barium titanate.

APPLICATIONS:

It is the catalyst for polymerization. Anti-eroding lubricant agent and emulsifying agent. Intermediate for pharmaceuticals, pesticide, coating materials, rubber chemicals, fiber, Alkylalkanolamines and other organic products. It is additive in petroleum industry. Solvent for hydrocarbon extraction.
