Benzyl alcohol is also called phenylmethanol or phenylcarbinol, is a clear, colorless liquid with a mild pleasant aromatic odor, melting point is 15 degree C and boiling point is 205 degree C. It is an aromatic alcohol and its formula C6H5CH2OH. It is used as a general solvent for paints, lacquers, inks, and epoxy resin coatings. It is soluble in water and also in benzene, methanol, ethanol, ether, chloroform, acetone.

Benzyl alcohol is a perfumed alcohol with a chemical formula of C6H5CH2OH. Normally, the Benzyl group is abbreviated "Bn", which should not be confused with "Bz", as it is used for benzoyl, thus the benzyl alcohol is represented as BnOH. This alcohol is a colorless liquid consisting of mild and pleasant fragrant. This solvent is extensively known for its characteristics such as polarity, low toxicity, and low vapor pressure. The Benzyl alcohol is moderately soluble in water (4 g/100 mL) and absolutely miscible in alcohols and diethyl ether. The anion produced by deprotonation of the Benzyl is represents as benzylate or benzyloxide.

 

Natural occurrences of Benzyl

The Benzyl alcohol is naturally produced by numerous plants and is frequently found in various fruits and teas. This solvent is also found in different types of essential oils such as jasmine, ylang-ylang, hyacinth, and to name a few. Besides, this alcohol is also found in castoreum from the castor sacs of beavers.

 

Manufacturing

Benzyl alcohol is manufactured through hydrolysis of benzyl chloride, adding sodium hydroxide

C6H5CH2Cl + NaOH → C6H5CH2OH + NaCl

The Benzyl alcohol is also manufactured though the Grignard reaction by reacting phenyl magnesium bromide (C6H5MgBr) along with formaldehyde, which is further followed by acidification.

Applications

Benzyl alcohol is mainly used as a general solvent for waxes, inks, paints, shellacs, lacquers, and epoxy resin coatings. Besides, this solvent is also used in paint strippers, particularly when it is combined with well-suited viscosity enhancers that encourage this combination to stick to the painted surfaces. It also acts as a predecessor to different types of esters, which is widely used in manufacturing of the soap, perfume, and flavors. The Benzyl alcohol is a main ingredient of e-liquid used in e-cigarettes, which enhances the flavors used. This solutions acts local anesthetic and antimicrobial agent when applied on damaged skin or mucous membranes provided the solvent should of 10% concentration. Besides, it can also be used a dye solvent, where it helps in augmenting the process of dying wool, nylon, and leather. Added to this, the Benzyl alcohol is used as a photographic developer and insect repellent.

 

Medical Applications

 

Benzyl alcohol is used as preservative of topical drugs, intravenous medications and cosmetics.

Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller quantity and use it only for the limit which is recommended. Do not take this medication by mouth. It is only has external use like the hair and scalp.
