Pleomele Song Of India is a popular ornamental plant, both in the landscape and the home. It can be enjoyed as a specimen plant, accent, or pruned to create a border. Several cultivars have been selected, particularly variegated clones with cream and yellow-green margins. It performs well as a houseplant, tolerating infrequent waterings. It prefers bright, filtered light, without direct sun exposure, restricted outdoors to zones 10–11.

Song of India traces back its root to Madagascar, Mauritius and nearby islands of the Indian Ocean.

USES

It is used as a traditional medicine which helps to cure diseases like malaria, dysentery, diarrhea, dysmenorrhea and is also helpful as an homostatic and an antipyretic agent. The leaves are used in making delicious herbal tea.

MAINTENANCE

Water: Keep soil lightly moist spring through fall, slightly drier in winter. Do not let soil get waterlogged.

 

Humidity: Average room humidity.

 

Temperature: Normal room temps (65-75°F/18-24°C) will suit this plant.

 

Soil: Good-quality, all-purpose potting mix.

 

Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks in spring and summer with a 10-10-10 liquid fertilizer diluted by half.

 

Propagation: Take 3-4 inch (8-10 cm) stem tip cuttings in spring. Pot 3 in the same container for a fuller effect. Cuttings are easy to root in moist sterile potting mix.
