A grinding machine, often termed as grinder, is one of the various power tools or machine tools available for grinding. It is a type of machine which uses an abrasive wheel as the cutting tool. Each grain of the wheel cuts small chip off the work piece via shear deformation. It comes in various variations such as belt grinder, bench grinder, cylindrical grinder etc with grinding wheel spindle power of 3.7kW and wheel surface speed of 33m/sec.

Detailed Description for Grinder Machine

The machine is brought in use for finishing and roughing flat, cylindrical and conical surfaces. From simplest grinding machines to the complex grinding machines, these can be classified as utility grinding machines, cylindrical grinding machines and surface grinding machines. 

Utility grinding machines:

This machine is intended for offhand grinding where the work-piece is hand-held and brought to bear against the abrasive surface of the rotating wheel. The utility grinding machine comprises of a horizontally mounted motor with a grinding abrasive wheel attached to each end of the motor shaft. These machines come in various shapes and sizes as listed below:

      Floor Mounted Utility Grinding Machine: This machine stands waist-high and is attached to the floor by bolts. The arrangement mounts two 12-inch-diameter by 2-inch-wide grinding abrasive wheels. Using the 12-inch wheel, the machine provides a maximum cutting speed of 5.500SFPM. The 2-HP electric motor running this machine has a maximum speed of 1.750RPM.

      Bench type Utility Grinding Machine: In this grinder tool, one coarse grinding wheel and one fine grinding wheel are usually mounted on the machine for convenient operation. The motor revolves at 3.450 RPM maximum to provide a maximum cutting speed for the 7 inch grinding wheels of about 6,300 surface feet per minute (SFPM).

      Bench type Utility Grinding and Buffing Machine: This is more suitable for miscellaneous grinding, buffing and cleaning. Since it does not contain any tool rests, eye-shields, or wheel guards, it is not recommended for the tool grinding. The ¼ HP electric motor revolves at a maximum of 4-inch-diameter wheel is approximately 3600 SFPM.

      Bench-type Tool and Cutter Grinder: This surface design is primarily designed to grind end mills. It can grind a large variety of small wood and steel cutters as well as slitting law cutters up to the diameter of 12 inches using the saw grinding attachment. 

      Grinding wheel travel: 7 ½ inch vertical

      Grinding wheel travel: 5 ½ inch horizontal

      Table travel: 6 inches

      Slitting saws with attachment: 12 inch diameter

      Distance between centres: 14 inches

      Swing on centres (diameter): 4 ½ inch diameter

      Swing in work head (diameter): 4 ½ inch diameter.

Milling and Grinding Lathe attachment: This attachment is a versatile tool attachment that mounts to the carriage of a lathe. It also performs internal and external cylindrical grinding apart from its other functions.

Surface grinding machine:

Surface grinder is used for grinding flat surfaces. The work-piece is made attached to a rectangular table which moves back and forth and reciprocates the effect beneath the wheel. 

Reciprocating Surface Grinding Machine: This reciprocating surface grinder is a horizontal-type surface grinding machine. A magnetic chuck is used for fastening the work-piece to the table which can be moved beneath the grinding abrasive wheel by hand or power feed. Grinding wheels are made adjustable

Cylindrical grinding machine:

The cylindrical grinding machine is used for shaping the outside of an object. Though the cylindrical grinder can work on variety of shapes, however object must be having a central axis of rotation. 

Four essential actions which are needed to define this machine are:

-The object must be constantly rotating.

-Grinding wheel must be constantly rotating.

-The grinding wheel is fed towards and away from the work.

-One of the ‘work’ or ‘grinding wheel’ is traversed with respect to each other.

Nevertheless, there are some special safety precautions which must be observed while operating grinding machine.

-Wear goggles for all the grinding machine operations.

-Check grinding wheels for cracks.

-Never operate the grinding wheels at more than the recommended speed.

-Never adjust the work-piece while operating.

-Remove work-piece from the grinding wheel before turning the machine off.

-Adjust tool rest 1/16 to 1/8 inch from the wheel.
