Detailed Description for Boxes

Electrical boxes

In electrical terminology, a "box" is used to contain and protect connections, thus:

* Pattress, a box used to hold electrical switches and receptacles

* Junction box, a fixed container for joining electrical connections, frequently installed in walls and containing electrical outlets.

* Fuse box, holds electrical fuses or circuit breakers

A pattress or pattress box is the container for the space behind electrical fittings such as power outlet sockets and light switches. Pattresses may be designed for either surface mounting (with cabling running along the wall surface) or for embedding in the wall or skirting board.

An electrical junction box is a container for electrical connections, usually intended to conceal them from sight and deter tampering. A small metal or plastic junction box may form part of an electrical conduit or thermoplastic-sheathed cable (TPS) wiring system in a building.Junction boxes form an integral part of a circuit protection system where circuit integrity has to be provided, as for emergency lighting or emergency power lines, or the wiring between a nuclear reactor and a control room. In such an installation, the fireproofing around the incoming or outgoing cables must also be extended to cover the junction box to prevent short circuits inside the box during an accidental fire.

A distribution board (also known as panelboard or breaker panel) is a component of an electricity supply system that divides an electrical power feed into subsidiary circuits, while providing a protective fuse or circuit breaker for each circuit in a common enclosure.
