It flashes a beam of electromagnetic ray, which gets reflected on hitting an obstacle. Thus, confirming the presence of an object nearby. This sensor can be relied on to detect up to a maximum distance called ‘Nominal Range’.

Detailed Description for Proximity Sensors

 A proximity sensor emits electromagnetic radiation like infrared and monitors any change in the field or the return signal. If the object being sensed lies in the vicinity of the sensor, the electromagnetic radiation hits the target and the reflected radiation returns to the sensor. Metal detectors are built with a ferrite coil core, an oscillator and a detector circuit. Oscillator is used to generate sine wave which drives the coil. The coil in conjunction with the ferrite core generates an electromagnetic field. When the field generated is interrupted by an object, the oscillator reduces its voltage proportional to the size of the object. This voltage reduction is detected by the detector circuit confirming the presence of an object.

2. Capacitive proximity sensors- Metal & Plastic detection

3. Magnetic proximity sensors- Magnet detection

4. Photoelectric proximity sensors- Plastic Detection

5. Ultrasonic proximity sensors- variety of objects regardless of material or surface properties.

There are various criterions which are needed to be kept in mind before going for the proximity sensor. 1) What is the sensing distance required? 2) How much space is available for mounting the sensor? 3) Is a shielded or unshielded sensor needed? 4) Consider environment placement concerns. 5) What is the sensor output connected to? & 6) Determine output connection type.
