Steel scraps are a class of recyclable materials especially the left over from steel manufacturing. They have a monetary value since they can be recycled and used in various manufacturing concerns like automobile, construction and building supplies.
In many countries steel containers, automobile parts, cans, construction materials and appliances add the greatest weight of recycled materials. For example, in the USA, in the year 2008, more than 97% of construction and structural steel and 106% of automobiles parts were recycled, this survey made by comparing the current steel intake for every industry with the quantity of recycled steel being produced. BOS steel typically comprises of lower concentrations of remaining elements such as copper, molybdenum and nickel ergo, it is commonly used to produce automotive fenders, tin cans, etc. EAF steelmaking procedure uses practically 100% recycled steel. This steel comprises of larger concentrations of lingering elements that cannot be detached through the application of oxygen and lime.
Types of scrap used in steelmaking
1. Heavy melting steel – Steel scrap greater than 6mm in thickness obtained from industrial or commercial scrap which includes beams, plates, channels or columns belong to this category.
2. Old car bodies – General automobile parts or vehicle parts with or without their interiors fall in this category.
3. Pressing steel – Domestic steel scrap metal with up to approximately 6mm thickness. Examples include White goods (refrigerator, washing machines, etc.), water tanks, and water heaters.
4. Reinforcing bars or mesh – These are steel scrap obtained from the construction industry within concrete assemblies.
5. Manganese steel – Non-magnetic, hardened steel scrap are obtained from the mining industry, rock crushers, cement mixers, and abrasive environments.
6. Rails – obtained from rail or train tracks.
