Detailed Description for Heimlich Valves

Heimlich valve is mainly used to eradicate air from a pneumothorax. When air is sucked back the other way, the sleeve closes off and no air is permitted to move in reverse direction. This construction allows the device to act as a one-way valve letting air (or liquid) to move in a single direction along the drainage tube. The end of the drainage tube is positioned inside the chest cavity of the patient, within the air or liquid to be drained. The flutter valve is positioned in the suitable orientation (maximum packages are designed so the valve can only be joined in the suitable orientation) and the pneumothorax is thus exiled from the chest of the patient.

The Heimlich valve or flutter valve is one-way valve that links to the chest tube. The valve allows further air and liquid out of the chest of the patient, letting lung to completely enlarge. Patient might go home with a Heimlich valve if lung is still leaking air after the surgery.

It is also considered as the industry standard for general-purpose wear resistance application. The device has exceptional resistance capacity to various methods of mechanical and chemical degradation over a wide temperature range, and maintains a reasonable level of hardness up to 500°C (930°F). It also has decent resistance capacity to impact and cavitation erosion. Stellite6 is perfectly suited to a various hard facing processes and can be turned with carbide tooling. Examples include valve seats and gates, erosion shields, and rolling couples, pump shafts and bearings. It is often used self-mated.

How should I care for my Heimlich valve?

1.       Clean the skin around the chest tube with detergent and water every single day. Remove any soap residue on the skin to stop irritation. Place a fresh, dry covering from where the chest tube enters into the skin. Change the covering if it gets wet or dirty.


2.       If the chest tube is draining liquid, it will be attached to a plastic vessel or a drainage bag. The type of collection device used will depend on the basis of how much liquid is draining. If Heimlich valve is attached to a small plastic vessel, write down the volume in the vessel and empty it into the toilet. If Heimlich valve is attached to a drainage sack, physician may want the patient or someone else to measure the quantity of liquid that is draining. Take down the quantity and then eradicate the liquid by opening the valve at the bottom end of the drainage sack.



3.       The chest tube may infuriate the chest wall, causing the patient somewhat uneasiness. Doctor will recommend pain medication if needed.
