Detailed Description for Four-way Valves

A four-way valve makes use of series of ports to regulate the movement of liquid in various directions using a single valve. The design would have a single inlet port with three outlet ports, or two inlet and outlet ports to regulate movement from two different sources. These valves are manually activated or triggered with hydraulic fluid, air or electricity.

A single-port four-way valve consists of inlet connection for the liquid to go inside the valve. Three outlet ports can be fitted to release piping for different storage tanks, or to regulate pistons on hydraulically functioned device. The valve would have a manual control arm or a powered motor or actuator to move the valve assembly. The internal valve ports open and close, releasing liquid in the preferred path.

Dual-port four-way valves are used when two fluid streams has to be controlled by a single valve. The interior design might allow two liquids to move at the same time, or one liquid stream can be open and the other closed. Regulation of a dual-port valve would be manual or powered, in the similar way as single-port valves.

There is an extensive range of possible applications for a four-way valve. Industrial controls make use of them to open and close other valves to feed chemical processes. They may be used to regulate steam movement to heat apparatus or buildings. A hydraulic four-way valve may regulate construction devices like cranes or backhoes by opening, closing or moving equipment parts with hydraulic pistons.

Air conditioning systems use four-way valve for heat pump applications. A heat pump extracts heat from outside, discharging it inside a building. In heating mode, the valve converses the movement of refrigerant through the outdoor and indoor coils. The discharge gas from the compressor is moved into the indoor coil and the heat is extracted to heat the interior. Switching the thermostat to cool will change the valve, and movement of refrigerant in the direction required to cool the interior.



 Swimming pools might use four-way valves to regulate the movement of water for draining, filtering and backwashing. The pool pump release will generally move through the pool filter to purify the water. Altering the four-way valve to the drain position can make the pool level to be lowered or the pool drained. A third position on the valve will move water in an opposite path through the filter to backwash the filter media. Four-way valves can lower the price and complication of a pool system by letting a single pump to provide numerous tasks.
