Detailed Description for Diamond and CBN Grinding Wheels

About Diamond and CBN Grinding Wheels

A grinding wheel is a wheel composed of an abrasive compound and used for various grinding (abrasive cutting) and abrasive machining operations. Such wheels are used in grinding machines. The wheels are generally made from a composite material consisting of coarse-particle aggregate pressed and bonded together by a cementing matrix (called the bond in grinding wheel terminology) to form a solid, circular shape. Various profiles and cross sections are available depending on the intended usage for the wheel. They may also be made from a solid steel or aluminium disc with particles bonded to the surface. Today most grinding wheels are artificial composites made with artificial aggregates, but the history of grinding wheels began with natural composite stones, such as those used for millstones.

Grinding wheels are applied for various grinding and cutting purposes. They can also be used in grinding machines. The grinding wheel specification is usually composite mainly consisting of course particles, bonded together by a cementing matrix to form a solid wheel (circular shape). The usage of the wheel decides its shape and various cross section designs. Grinding wheels manufacturers have a special focus on the process followed with strict regulations on composition and regularity to prevent the grinding disc from exploding due to intensive pressure. Super-abrasives are grinding wheels with CBN or Diamond grains.

Why CBN wheels?

CBN ist the best suitable grain for grinding hardened steel: You will hardly generate a high temperature, because CBN has an extremely good conductivity for temperature, so the heat generated is dispersed quickly. This is also helped by the shape of the metal body of the wheel. No more blues.

The wheels have an extremely long working life with an excellent rate of stock removal. The face will stay flat, no dressing and shaping necessary.

They will produce just the right cutting edge for turning tools.

Abrasive Features

Diamond

CBN

Due to its extreme hardness, Diamond is

particularly suitable for machining the following

materials:

– All carbide metal grades

– Cermet

– Oxide and non-oxide ceramics

– PCD / PCB

– Hard facing alloys

– Sapphire, glass

– Ferrite

– Graphite

– Fiber reinforced synthetics

– Precious and semi-precious stones

CBN consists of the elements boron and nitrogen. In contrast to Diamond, CBN has no carbon atoms, making it suitable for machining steel. CBN is better suited for machining the following materials:

– Hardened steel over approx. 54 HRc hardness

– High-speed steel (HSS)

– Stellite

– Nickel-based special alloys
