Detailed Description for Copper Busbar

A busbar, which is also referred as bus bar, buss bar or bussbar is a strip of metal used to conduct electricity within the sub-station or distribution board or electric switchboard. It is mainly used to carry substantial electric current for short distances. The greater surface area of the metal strip prevents any losses that may happen due to corona discharge.

The maximum amount of current that can be transferred is determined by the material composition and the cross-sectional size of a busbar. For instance, an aluminum smelter has large copper busbars that can carry ten thousand of amperes to electrochemical cells.


Normally, the copper busbars are designed in various shapes such as hallow tubes, braided wires, solid bars and rods and flat strips and to name a few. Some of the aforesaid shapes allow heat to dissipate more efficiently. The high surface area and cross sectional area ratio plays a vital in heat dissipation. Hence, it is vital to choose proper design to achieve greater heat dissipation.

In order to operate efficiently, a busbar should have rigid support on its own weight. Busbars are normally consists of switch gear, panel board and bus way enclosures.  These strips are also used to connect high voltage equipment at switchyards. Electrical supply is split into separate circuits rather than branching at a single location.

Normally, the copper busbars are plated with medium phosphorous electro less plating, lead alloys, tin and silver. Plating is done to reduce lead times and is more cost-effective.

Busbars are classified according to its size and capacity. According to its size there are three types of busbar;

Tubular bus bar

Solid bus bar

Flat bus bar

According to busbar capacity, there are four types

Extra high voltage bus

High voltage bus

Medium voltage bus


Low voltage bus
