Buchholz Relay

Buchholz Relay is one of the most essential protective devices to protect equipment such as transformer, capacitors, on-load tap changers, etc. It detects abnormal working of the components inside the equipment and consequently minimizes the spread of any damage to the equipment active part by disconnecting faulty apparatus before large scale damage occurs to the apparatus or other connected apparatus.

Detailed Description for Buchholz Relay

A relay is an electrically operated switch. Many relays use an electromagnet to mechanically operate a switch, but other operating principles are also used, such as solid-state relays. Relays are used where it is necessary to control a circuit by a low-power signal, or where several circuits must be controlled by one signal.

Buchholz relay is a safety device mounted on some oil-filled power transformers and reactors, equipped with an external overhead oil reservoir called a "conservator". The Buchholz relay is used as a protective device sensitive to the effects of dielectric failure inside the equipment.
