Detailed Description for OSB

Oriented Strand Boards (OSB) are manufactured in wide mats. The cross-oriented layers of thin rectangular shaped wooden strips are compressed and bonded together using synthetic resin adhesives. These adhesives consist of 95% wood and 5% wax and resin. Different types of resin are used to manufacture OSB Boards. Phenol formaldehyde (PF) and Melamine fortified Urea Formaldehyde (MUF) are the most popular moisture resistant binders used to manufacture OSB plywood.

The different layers of OSB are made by shredding the wood into rectangular strips, which are separated and then titled on a belt. The mat is made in a forming line. The external layers of wooden strips are aligned to the panel’s strength axis whilst the internal layers of the strips held perpendicular. The number of layers placed on the board is determined by the thickness of the panel. However, the thickness of the individual layers may vary.

 OSB’s are available in different thicknesses, strength, panel size and rigidity

 OSB sheets do not have internal gaps

 OSB’s are water resistant and sturdy

 OSB’s have superior load-bearing capacity

There are different types of OSB Boards

 General purpose OSB’s

 Load-bearing boards for dry condition

 Load-bearing boards for humid condition

 Heavy duty load bearing boards

OSB or Plywood ? Posted on 8/11/2016

OSB should be kept high and dry while storing and even after installation. Though OSB has strength and durability as plywood, the tolerance to water or moisture is less in OSB (they tend swell up). Hence, OSB make a cheaper substitute to Plywood where there is less moisture impact to the structure.
